about

“Plasma” was recorded in 2019-2020 and conceived by Alex Eliopoulos (of Impuritan) as part-solo album, part-collaborative art project. These 6 songs are a tapestry of solo work mixed with impromptu contributions from musicians & friends across the US and Germany, several months in the making. The final album was eventually arranged & assembled by Alex in San Francisco.

“Plasma” is a unique blend of psychedelia, 70s/80s/90s underground & indie influences, and atmospheric noise rock. It’s well-suited for vinyl format (in two 3-song doses). Lyrics are minimal—primal and dreamy vocals are omnipresent, but discernible words only appear on side B. This album rides on atmospherics and flowing song structure characterized by incendiary fuzzed-out guitars, a mix of acoustic and synthesized instruments, melodic bass, and experimental loops/sampling.

The album is raw, lucid, and abstract in equal measure. Each song is a microcosm that may never exist (live) in this exact form again. Patterns may also emerge on repeated listens, like double or layered meanings. “Liber Xaos”, the album’s opener, can be interpreted as “Book of Chaos” or “Free Chaos”. “Plasma” is a combined reference to the Greek word πλάσμα (creature), blood plasma, and primordial/cosmic soup. All of these meanings are equally valid.

The creation of “Plasma” began pre-COVID and ended in a changed world where involuntary remote transmission between artists, or musicians and their audience, has become a norm instead of an alternative or anomaly. Yes, the album is energized, mystified ear-candy at its core—but also a testament to perseverance and seeing cycles of apocalypse and re-birth unfold before us.

Key album contributors include Christian Peters (Samsara Blues Experiment, Surya Kris Peters), Kevin Jones & Mark Raymond (Len Bias), Stan Chong (Goose Club, Psychic Twin), TTriss Williams Renard (Spiral Bombs), and more.
